The Band: Richard
Jackson (vocals/guitar), Ben Jeffrey (lead guitar), Chris Morton (bass) and Sam
Bull (drums/percussion).
Their music will take you back to a time when rings of
cigarette smoke drifted harmlessly through seedy jazz joints and sweet, soulful
pop ruled the airwaves. Laid back. They’ll give you laid back.
The first thing you’ll notice is the voice. Richard’s
versatile vocal delivery has a cathartic presence about it, always oozing an
effortless soulful mood whether deep down or reaching for the high notes.
He also pens the words before the fully formed songs are massaged
into shape by the band, drawing inspiration from a reservoir of jazz, bebop,
indie-pop, metal and hip-hop.
It’s not surprising to learn music runs in the Jackson household.
“I’ve always been surrounded by it. My folks used to listen to
people like Bobby Darin, the Isley Brothers and Frank Sinatra,” says Richard.
The band has flourished from an initial music project
between best friends Richard and lead guitarist Ben Jeffrey which began in
2006.
“It’s been two years or so since we started getting ideas
together and things have really stepped up recently. With Chris (bass) and Sam
(drums) joining us, things have really gone in a different direction.”
Becoming a four-piece expanded upon the ideas and influences
each member brought to the party and the band played their debut gig at The
Howard, in Sheffield. They’ve not looked back
since, even enjoying a stretch as the house band at former jazz joint The Runaway
Girl.
2008 has been a formative year for the Bo’ Mods. They’ve won
fans through their busy live schedule and burgeoning repertoire which has seen
them earn support slots for pop diva Roisin Murphy and Little Man Tate. Their
first major headline show takes place on September 6th, at Plug, a
date which coincides with the release of their debut 4-track EP, Love Conquers, recorded with the help of
producer Dave Sanderson at the renowned 2fly studios where the likes of Arctic
Monkeys and Richard Hawley have laid down their tracks.
“We were really excited to be working with Dave considering
all the amazing music to have come out of 2Fly. He really got our sound,” adds
Richard.
